Play Unloosed is a sustainable toy company built around one big (and very intentional) idea: kids don’t need more instructions—they need more space to imagine. Rooted in early childhood development principles like loose parts play and childhood schemas, their products are designed to spark curiosity, creativity, and open-ended exploration.

As they prepared to launch, Play Unloosed needed a premium brand identity and e-commerce website that could speak to modern parents, educators, and caregivers who care about both beautiful design and meaningful play. Mothershed Design Co. partnered with Play Unloosed to create a joyful, nature-inspired brand and online shopping experience that feels as thoughtful as the toys themselves.

The Challenge

The toy industry is loud. Bright colors, flashing lights, licensed characters, and endless “must-haves” compete for attention—and for kids’ imaginations. Play Unloosed was doing something very different: offering sustainable, open-ended loose parts that invite children to build, sort, stack, and create however they choose.

The challenge was translating that philosophy into a brand that feels elevated and premium, while still being warm, playful, and approachable. It needed to clearly communicate the developmental value of loose parts play and childhood schemas without feeling academic or overly “educational.” Instead, it had to feel inspiring—something parents instantly connect with and kids instinctively understand through play.

At the same time, the brand needed to build trust and credibility in the sustainable toy and early learning space, positioning Play Unloosed as a thoughtful, design-forward alternative to mass-market toys.

The Result

We created a brand identity and e-commerce website that brings the joy of open-ended play to life.

From the logo and messaging to custom illustrations, the brand is intentionally expressive, natural, and playful in all the right ways. A soft, nature-inspired color palette paired with organic shapes and tactile visual elements helps communicate both the educational foundation and the hands-on magic of loose parts play.

We also provided in-house product photography, capturing the textures, materials, and real-world use of the toys in a way that feels warm, honest, and inviting—less “perfect catalog,” more “this is what play actually looks like.”

To support launch and sales, we designed and developed a custom e-commerce website that blends storytelling with shopping. Visitors are introduced to the concept of loose parts and childhood schemas in a way that feels simple and engaging, before flowing naturally into product discovery and purchase.

The result is a standout sustainable toy brand and e-commerce experience that positions Play Unloosed as a leader in open-ended play.
